A hazy morning dawned as we drove along the clifftops of the South
Coast towards our starting point of Milford on Sea but nonetheless it
was tops off from the word go. Cars were already gathering facing the
sea before organiser, Chris Mills, arrived having taken a wrong turning
already. Maybe we should have had our suspicions aroused at this point ?
Once Bruce and Chris had managed to untangle the table and put the
flags and banners up we were ready for signing on . Chris dished out the
route plans and those of us with poor eyesight searched for our
magnifying glasses to read the tightly spaced instructions. This run was
shaping up to be a challenge already. Fully briefed and having kicked
plenty of tyres Chris flagged us away on behalf of the South Coast Road
Runners and the MGF/TFs and VW Golf headed towards the New Forest. With
the day warming up it was looking perfect for an autumnal drive through
the forests falling leaves. Turn left in the general direction of
Bramshaw said the instructions so we sailed by the turning for Stony
Cross and realised we had gone wrong. A quick about turn to head back
meant that we could wave at several other Fs and TFs going wrong as
well. With good spirit the challenge of deciphering Chris's sometimes
cryptic directions proved exciting for many of us.
Somehow most of managed to get to the half way point where we
could indulge in ice cream and classic car spotting as the Hants and
Berks Classic Car club were also holding an event on the same day.
Triumphs, Aston Martins, MGs and other exotica could be seen heading in
the opposite direction to us.
The next challenge was trying to dodge the Hampshire Hogs, Horses ,
Cows and Sheep wandering aimlessly across the road in front as we
negotiated the tiny country lanes. We could smell the steam of the
Watercress Line and headed rapidly around Winchester to arrive at the
Alrseford Station car park where Chris was wiating for us to wave us
into our reserved parking area.
Tea and large chunks of home made cake waited for us in the station
cafe which was very welcome. Some then took a trip on the steam engines
of the Mid Hants Railway whilst others just watched as the big engines
drew in to the station enveloping everyone in swirls of steam.
Thanks to Chris and the South Coast Road Runners for organising an
intersting end of season MGF Register Main Event.
