We dipped our tow in to the Yorkshire area a few years ago with a run across the North York Moors and in 2007 we returned to a similar area for our second main day run of the year. With the recent bad weather, flooding and some organisational problems it was always touch an go whether the event would take place but finally we made it with the assistance of the MGCC Yorkshire and David Copeman in particular who came up with the route for us.

What a splendid route that was as well - starting at Macdonalds on a retail park just outside York we quickly left the city behind and headed towards the Howardian hills through some lovely market towns and villages with plenty of opportunities to stop and admire the scenery en route.

Several cars stopped at Bylands Abbey for a look around  these romantic ruins and also later at Rieveaulx nestling in its valley. Both are dramatic and were well worth a visit. We passed a white horse and the famous Mouseman studios , some stopped for lunch in Helmsley and joined the throng of motorbikes that had gathered in the main square. Carefully avoiding sudden showers the drivers found themsselves dipping their wheels at one point in a river , or so it seemed as this single track ford disappeared around a bend. We wondered how deep it would get but there was no need to worry it only came up to the doors (!) - but Dave & Margaret were prepared with their picnic hamper raised above the water level so the food did not get soggy.

Whilst the weather remained mostly dry there were a couple of exercises in hood raising and lowering but by the time the cars got to Castle Howard we were still fairly dry.

We had been allowed to park on the cricket green and the cars made a fine sight arcing around it's border. Some of us wandered down to the house to be greeted by biog guns and armoured vehicles - we needn't have worried as they were props for the new feature film of Brideshead Revisited which was currently in production at the house. It did add an extra dimension to our visit as we could watch behind the scenes of a feature film being made . It was odd leaving the house and looking back to see sandbags, guns and an army camp on the lawn but where were Sebastian and Charles ?
