Just placed my YA (Y/EXLU/5190) onto the web site...what a GREAT web this is...just discovered it last week
(actually Paul discovered me as I was selling my YA on eBay) I am selling my YA and other collector cars
(also a 1936 MG SA saloon) as I will be selling my home and six car garage soon ... very hard to sell such a unique
automobile but then selling any of my cars is difficult ... I have considered selling just the house and moving
into the garage with the cars and my dog.

Read with interest Chris Barnes (166) entry about MG YB registration YMG 22.
This was my first car in 1965 in which I also passed my test in it in December 1965. When I bought it from Mick
Taylor (of Camberwell, London) it was grey in colour. While in my ownership I painted it red (by hand with
Polyurethane diamond hard paint!) sacrilegious – but I was young. I also “decoked” it. I loved the built in
hydraulic jacks (until they no-longer retracted!) Had many adventures in the car with an Italian girl called
Prisca and a lovely catholic girl called Kathleen (Notre Dame school) and a few others – great days. I sold the
car on in 1966 for about £55.

I am interested in acquiring a
MG YT sometime next year ... I had a beautiful 1952 MG YB in the mid
1960's. Reg No ECS 308, chassis YB562. Black with chrome rimmed black
headlights. I reluctantly sold it. The purchaser later went off to
university, while he was away his mother scrapped it - wicked, I believe
all it needed was a clutch cable. Nigel Kelly

I own an M.G. YB saloon Registration No. YMG 16 which was mentioned on
this register in a comment in 2005. My car has not been used since 1974
and is in need of complete restoration. I also have various parts from
my previous YB, NOE 765. Half engine XPAG, cylinder head XPAG, gearbox,
radiator, YB front bumper, dashboard complete with instruments, steering
rack and column, seating, windscreen etc. Also YA wheels (won't fit
YB). Owing to space considerations I will be advertising everything on
E-Bay shortly. Buyer collects. Clive Evrall.

Very well presented site, as an apprentice mechanic in the early 50s I
was given a clapped out 2 door 4 seater y convertible by the workshop I
worked in. I completely stripped it and it was resprayed original red and
fitted with a new hood and torneau cover. Alas marriage called and I had
to sell. Have never seen another like it in Western Australia. Cheers Don

Excellent website - I keep coming back to it - loads of information. I'm seriously thinking about getting an MG Y, have always liked the appearance, and can remember a couple of them when I was growing up near Cambridge, and the neighbour when we lived in Queensland
had one too. Saw John Emerson's car advertised but think I was a tad too
late. Will have to keep looking.

Browsing your site has brought back fond childhood memories of my
grandfather's Y-type. I think he may have owned it from new, and it was
his pride and joy until he and my grandmother sold up and went to
Australia around 1961. He treated the car with the greatest of care and
respect while he owned it - riding his bike to work and only using the car
on Sundays (usually for drives in the countryside to the west of
Burton-on-Trent) or on special occasions, whilst always garaging it, and I
can remember there being a little paraffin heater kept under the sump too,
so the engine wouldn't freeze up in cold weather.
My memory is that the car was beige and brown, but that's from my
childhood, nearly 50 years ago, and (looking at the colour charts here) I
guess it may well have been Sequoia Cream and Sun Bronze. I believe he
sold it to a nearby farmer, who eventually used it for a chicken coop, but
I hope somebody might have salvaged it!
No
doubt influenced by his Y-type, I later bought a 1967 MGB GT (it was my
second car) and I was an MGCC member for a while, but (I'm afraid) these
days I drive a Subaru Legacy.

Like the website content but not a computer expert so was unable to

the system kept asking me re my internet connections. Sorry, but found it
very unfriendly to use. I don't use Outlook Express as I find it
cumbersome and non-user friendly, so I guess I'll have to look in from the
outside and not contribute.

Probably the best "type" site I have seen. I
particularly like the mix of general interest and technical "stuff".
I read the 5 speed conversion article from top to
bottom, it would make life much more relaxed for driver and car alike!
Not so sure about supercharging etc, there are plenty
of younger classics around if the need for more performance is felt that
strongly. I must be getting old, "don't need more performance"!!!
I have been out of classic cars for some years now, this site has gone a
long way to convincing me that my return will be with a pretty little Y
type.

What great memories your Y website brings back! I learned to drive (and
passed my test first time in 1959) in a 1952 YB
registration number YMG 22. Yes: many happy
times were had with car - not to mention quite a few ditches around
Reigate in which I ended up! I remember bombing up the M1 when it opened -
quite a different experience in a modern car. I wonder if YMG
22 has survived despite the bumps and bruises I gave it?
(YMG 22 is unknown on the DVLA website Chris, so
it is probably re-tyred by now to the motorways in the skies - no ditches
up there! Webmaster.)

UMG 290 was delivered to my father in October 1950, on
arriving home with it after picking it up from University Motors in
Piccadilly, the exhaust system was ripped off
when the car dipped entering the drive, a steep slope with a small metal
plate sticking up as a stop for the gates, I learned
to drive in it. My father was not happy with it from the first day, it was
nothing like his 1940 coupe. He experienced a lot of engine trouble and in
desperation drove back to Abingdon in the first few months and I believe a
new engine was fitted, finally when the 12 months covenant was up
(This was a legislative covenant imposed by the UK
Government to allegedly prevent racketeering and black marketing in new
cars after World War II by UK citizens ~ Webmaster.) he sold
it. I believe the price when new was £751 and he sold it for £1,400,
but was duped and never received full payment. It is
fantastic to see the photographs on your web site and sent an email last
night to David Pelham, received a reply at
11:18pm last and am
hoping to hear from the owner Jack Murray.
Our house number, at the
time, was 290:
coincidence or a case of personal plate?
I am not really an MG enthusiast, but I do
like classic car shows & steam engine rallies, and looking at the various
old models I started to think about UMG 290, and
found via the DVLA site that it was still on the road, (surprised
to see it is now white) and so started the search.
How did I
Like it? Wow! a boys dream, 17, brand new car and
Dad lets me drive it!
I loved it, however Dad said it did not compare
with his previous model (I think that was the VA
or WA, not sure, he called it a fixed head coupe).
So whilst waiting for the 12 month covenant to expire he bought a 1948
Riley 1.5 litre and I went on to drive that (he didn`t want to use the MG
anymore in order to keep the mileage down).

Excellent and informative site, it's good to see the Y Type fraternity
keeping the flag flying. People who know that I was the chap behind 'Whyparts'
often ask why I ceased trading, the answer is simple - I had a stroke
(followed later with metal 'strap' fitted in one arm to stop wrist
movement!). I still keep tabs on the classic car movement but regrettably
am not in a position to actively follow my interests. Kind regards to all
who remember me.
